While warm temperatures have been around for a few weeks already. Many gardeners throughout the Keweenaw and Upper Peninsula are getting ready for planting season this spring. There are always many beautiful options to choose from to fill the space in front of the house. But there are some wonderful benefits to using native plant species over non-natives.
“And one of the great things about native plants is that their root systems go very deep into the soil and they suck that water up so that they can prevent runoff from happening on your property and they can prevent erosion.” – Marcia Goodrich, President, Keweenaw Wild Ones
Keweenaw Wild Ones will host a presentation tonight at the Calumet Public Library at the Calumet High School titled, Why Native? At the presentation attendees can hear from Goodrich about the different benefits of using native plant species, how some common gardening plants are now considered invasive, and about different resources in the region to find native plants from local nurseries.
