Upper Peninsula Health Systems Portage has started a new therapy program, that brings furry friends to people in need after partnering with a regional animal assistance group. UPHS Portage has begun to work with Superiorland Pet Partners, which is a volunteer group of pets and their handlers working to share comfort and animal therapy with those in need. UPHS Portage has invited the community to meet some of the handlers and pets during a lunch and learn session later this week. That will also inform the community of the benefits of animal-assisted therapy and animal-assisted activities.
Superiorland Pet Partners started in 2004 and is part of an international organization with its headquarters in Seattle Washington. The group has several registered pet handlers in the upper peninsula, some located in Marquette County and surrounding communities. Their volunteers and their pets visit hospitals, assisted living homes, and nursing homes throughout the Upper Peninsula.
The UPHS Portage lunch and learn with Superiorland Pet Partners on pet therapy will take place at the hospital in Conference room number one, on Friday. The information session will begin at noon.
