League of Women Voters mark Equal Pay Day

The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country will be gathering around the husky statue on Michigan Tech’s campus tomorrow, decked in red. The demonstration marks Equal Pay Day, meant to highlight the wage disparity that exists between men and women.

President Barry Fink says in a release that there is progress on the issue. In 2019, the event was held on April 2nd, over two weeks later. The earlier it is, the narrower the difference. Fink says that if no pay gap existed, Equal Pay Day would be celebrated on January 1st.

Equal pay calculations do not take into account any adjustments, such as premiums attached to male-dominated industries like construction and manufacturing, which tend to be more dangerous and require retirement at an earlier age because of their physical demands.
