County sheriffs and the Michigan State Police are both urging caution while traversing the area today. The Baraga County Sheriff’s Department posted to its Facebook page late Wednesday warning of black ice. The northeast winds that took hold yesterday brought significant snowfall to the Huron Mountains and along the Keweenaw Bay from L’Anse to the Lower Entry.
MSP is reminding people to give themselves extra time to get to their destinations. In short, take it slow when conditions require it. The Calumet Post also suggests motorists have an emergency kit in their cars. Some of the proposed items include cell phone chargers, a first aid kit, flares, a whistle, water and some snacks, a full gas tank, a flashlight, tow rope, winter apparel, a shovel, and a brush.
The post says snow tires should be utilized if possible through the season.
