Laurium raises funds for those displaced by Calumet fire

A good time has turned into a good cause. The Village of Laurium presented the Salvation Army with a check totaling $1,035.00 on Saturday to be used to aid those affected by Calumet’s Fifth Street Fire. The George Gipp Ice Arena is hosting roller skating during the summer and opening night was May 22nd, just hours after the blaze.

This year is the first time the village has utilized the rink in this way. Council member Jenn
Jenich-Laplander talks about the work involved to make it possible.

Obviously the ice has to be melted. The logos that were on the floor had to be cleaned, so we had someone come in and then clean the floor, and prep it to be able to have the skates on it.

The facility has been open every other weekend so far, but that is expected to transition to a weekly schedule as summer continues. Attendance has the council excited and members are personally volunteering to expand its availability for the public.

Admission is only two dollars and funds raised going forward will be donated to the village’s beautification committee. Concessions are also sold, including nachos, popcorn, hot dogs, and more.
