Laurium has a new Planning Commission

Big changes are happening within the Village of Laurium government. Council President John Sullivan says that the Board of Trustees has several young members filled with ideas, energy, and optimism.

One of the highlights is that we as a Village Council are relatively young — young in the fact that we haven’t been on the council very long. Our person with the most seniority there is six years, so we’re all full of energy and good ideas, and we want to see those pushed out.

Laurium is currently in the process of adopting a village manager, rather than administrator, to oversee day-to-day operations. Additionally, it intends to become a Redevelopment Ready Community. The City of Houghton has already been certified and Hancock is working towards that.

The process is overseen by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Laurium will need to develop a Master Plan through a newly formed Planning Commission.

Laurium has experimented with roller skating at the Gipp Arena over the summer, and is bringing back its holiday decorating contest and Santa Claus parade next month.

Sullivan will be on Copper Country Today this weekend.
