Work is underway to try to determine the future of Meadowbrook Field in L’Anse. The expanse in front of Meadowbrook Arena has been vacant since L’Anse High School moved its football games to Volunteer Field several years ago. L’Anse Township owns the field, and Eric Cadeau from the Township’s Meadowbrook Park Planning Task Force gave the L’Anse Village Council an update last evening. Cadeau said they have received dozens of different ideas about what to do with the property.
While the sled hill has been widely talked about, Cadeau says there are challenges. Some physical impediments exist on the hill, and it’s too steep.
Cadeau estimates that it would take 2,000 cubic yards of fill to round out a safe sledding area 200 feet wide. There may be grant money coming available from the state for local park projects, and Cadeau said the township is considering hiring a consultant to develop a formal plan. That plan might be expanded to include parcels adjacent to Meadowbrook Field owned by the village, and the school district.
At last night’s meeting, village manager Bob LaFave noted that Hornet Way is closed next to the school property. A culvert that failed is being replaced. Work should be completed before school starts. Wrap-up work is being completed on the paving projects for L’Anse and Baraga Avenues, and the streets have been reopened to traffic.
