L’Anse Raises Electric and Garbage Rates, Adds Perigo to the Village Board of Trustees

L’Anse will raise electricity and garbage rates for residents in the village. Considering recent rises in inflation, the village will increase electricity for the first time in three years. L’Anse will raise electricity rates by 7 percent, representing $6.29 added to a household’s bill each month. The garbage rate will also increase due to inflation and rising gas costs. Residents will now pay 16 dollars garbage services in L’Anse. In line with the rate increase the village also plans to increase cost of utility security deposits for businesses and residents.

The L’Anse village fire department has begun to mark and inspect hydrants for the winter. The department did note that several hydrants throughout the village froze and began weeping due to the recent cold spell. The department will continue to mark those hydrants for future repairs, while marking which hydrants have been inspected. Other winter preparation projects around the village have been completed by public works, such as the lights up around the village. Public works will continue to work with the fire and water departments to prepare the village infrastructure for winter.

A final item asked trustees to review thoughts on the previous month’s trustee interviews and consider an appointment to the board. Village Trustee Jason VanStraten was absent at the meeting and asked to review the candidate resumes or to abstain from the vote. Village Manager Bob LaFave told him that he was required to vote if he was in person and able. Trustees thanked each of the two candidates for their interest in assisting the village with challenges and developing goals, determining that each would bring unique qualities. The village will add Ryan Perigo to the village board of trustees. Perigo was voted in on a vote of four to two with Christopher Miller and Leann Davis descending from the board.
