The village of L’Anse is gearing up for a big weekend full of hockey with some familiar faces. On Saturday athletes from around the area will compete in the L’Anse Winter Classic Old-Timers Hockey Tournament. Village manager Bob LaFave and village president Rob Ervast agreed that the tournament has been a long look forward event for not just the teams on the ice, but for the local community as well.
“There’s a sign out there, it will be done at Meadowbrook. And I know, I think they are up to five teams already. So they’re very excited about that upcoming tournament. So if you’re so inclined, feel free to check it out this weekend.” – Bob LaFave, Village Manager, Village of L’Anse
“One of my things too, is it draws in quite a few teams not from here to the area. So it’s not only the old timers that are playing hockey, but they bring their kids and wives and kind of make a whole mini vacation out of it in a lot of cases. So we’ll get an influx in our restaurants and businesses.” – Rob Ervast, Village President, Village of L’Anse
So far there are five teams signed up in the L’Anse Winter Classic old-timers tournament. Tournament play will begin on Saturday and continue Sunday. All proceeds raised during the weekend will support the Lanse Meadowbrook Arena and Baraga Ice Rink.
