L’Anse, Hancock Earn Softball Tourney Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school softball tournament play yesterday…
– In Division Four at the Hancock Driving Park, L’Anse routed the Gogebic Miners 27-0. Megan Kraft struck out seven while pitching a perfect game. She also had two hits. Hancock dispatched Jeffers 12-2 in five innings. Delaney Heinonen struck out eight, and had two hits and drove in two runs. Jordyn Rowe’s double in the fifth inning drove in the final two runs. Ishpeming got 11 strikeouts from Emma Bleau, and eliminated Lake Linden-Hubbell 12-1. The Hematites scored seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game away. The district championship will be decided on Friday. L’Anse will face Hancock, and Ishpeming will take on Baraga in the semifinals. The title game will follow. In opening-round baseball tournament play yesterday…
– In Division Three, Calumet blanked Houghton 10-0, in a game that ended after five innings. The Copper Kings will take on Gladstone Saturday at noon in Negaunee in the district semi-finals. Iron Mountain will face Negaunee in the other semifinal.

In golf, the Division One UP Championships will be played at Marquette today. Calumet, Houghton, and the L’Anse/Baraga team will take part.

Verlander

MLB
Rookie Eric Skoglund out-dueled Justin Verlander last night, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Kansas City Royals 1-0. Making his first major league start, Skoglund struck out five and gave up just two hits, while pitching into the seventh inning. Verlander completed seven frames, giving up just a single run on six hits.

Peralta

The Tigers wrap up that series at Kansas City tonight. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Ian Kennedy. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:50 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Jay Bruce’s RBI single in the 12th inning lifted the New York Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. The Mets built a 4-1 lead over the first six innings. The Brewers tied it with three in the seventh. In the 12th, T.J. Rivera singled off Wily Peralta. He moved to second on a walk, advanced to third on a force out, and scored on Bruce’s sharp line drive to center field.

The Brewers face the Mets in New York again tonight. Junior Guerra will start against Jacob deGrom.

Brandt

NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Nashville Predators in game two of the Stanley Cup series tonight. The Penguins lead the series 1-0.

Finlandia
Evan Brandt has been named the head baseball coach at Finlandia University. Brandt had spent the last two years as the assistant coach for the Lions under Steve Nordstrom. He also played college ball at Finlandia.

Calumet Hockey Golf Tourney
The Calumet Copper Kings golf tournament will be held Saturday, June 10th, at the Calumet Golf Course. The cost is $150.00 per three-person team, which includes 18 holes of golf and dinner. The registration deadline is this Friday. To sign up, call the Calumet High School Athletic Department at 337-0311, extension 2204; or email sjacques@clkschools.org. Proceeds will support the Calumet High School hockey program.
