Lakeshore Drive Parking Structure Demolition Begins Next Week

The Lakeshore drive parking lot will begin the deconstruction process next week.

“Starting on the end by Suomi or the Library, however you want to look at it, [they’ll] be starting at that end and be going up to what old-timers know as the old Swift warehouse where that narrow spot is. So they’ll go up to that point, get everything down, and then they’ll hop over and do the west side because while the east side is going on, you can still park on the west side because they’re actually two separate structures.” -Eric Waara, City Manager of Houghton.

The crew will begin blocking off parking starting next Tuesday.

“Right now, of course the contractor would like to get the demolition as quickly as possible. Right now, they’re telling us four weeks a side. You know, if it’s going to take longer to do it safely then we want to do it safely. [Once] it’s down, everything changes. It gets a lot easier.” -Eric Waara, City Manager of Houghton.
