Lakeshore Drive Parking Deck Update: Work To Start Late This Month

The City of Houghton received updates for the Lakeshore Drive parking deck project.

The General Contractor is MJO of Hancock, but the deck demo itself is subcontracted. The large-scale demolition work will be completed by a company called Veit from Minnesota.

Around 18 May, MJO will be sending in a team to professionally document preconstruction condition of those buildings touching or in close proximity to the deck. They will be taking pictures and video so they have catalogues before the demolition to aid in assessing any possible damage claims.

The city is planning on having a weekly coordination meeting for the businesses, at least until the deck itself is down. They will be on Wednesdays at 9:00 am at the City Center, and the first will be next Wednesday.

Here are the estimated dates for the project:

  • They plan to start on 30 May with blocking the east side doors, putting up traffic control, etc.
  • Right now just assume that there will be no parking on the east side of the upper deck starting on 30 May. It will be blocked off.
  • Around 31 May they will close Lakeshore Drive to traffic from Huron Street to the west end of the east deck (the narrow part between the two decks). Parking under the east deck will not be available.
  • Those with trash pickup in that area will be contacted directly to make sure their trash can be picked up.
  • Around June 5, Veit will begin the demolition of the east deck. That work could take up to 4 weeks. The waterfront trail will be detoured for part of this time.
  • MJO will get started on the street, sidewalks, etc. on the east side right behind the demolition work as it progresses.
  • Around the end of June they’ll move to the west deck. We’ll be able to firm up the date once they’ve been able to get started on the east deck.
