Lakeshore Drive Construction Changes the Verna Mize Triathlon Route

Verna Mize Triathlon will make a slight change to this year’s route. In years past the triathlon has had runners and bikers run toward downtown Houghton along Lakeshore Drive. However, with construction on the roadway, organizers will change the route to run along Houghton Canal Road.

Racers will leave the campground just like they do on their bike. The main miles runners will make their turn at Coles Creek Road and head back to the finish line at Kestner Park. The mini miles runners will go told Mill Hill road, which is one mile out and one mile back and they’ll head back to the fish. So that’s the only change this year is the run will be on Canal Road as well. – Mary Kaminski, Lead Organizer, Verna Mize Triathlon

Kaminski wants everyone on the roadway to remain safe. Including travelers heading out to different destinations. The Houghton County Sheriff and Michigan State Police will assist by placing patrol vehicles on the Verna Mize Triathlon route. Additionally, drivers will see several markers notifying them they’ve entered the race course and to use caution when near participants. Those interested in registering for the Verna Mize triathlon should contact Kaminski with any questions and for registration details at 906 482 2422. Those interested in learning more about the race for 2024 can find more information online. Registration on Saturday will begin at 6:30 am. Racers will take off at 8 am.
