Lakeshore Center reopening

Michigan Tech provided the following update to its employees who work in the Lakeshore Center in downtown Houghton on the waterfront. The building is reopening on Tuesday and the pier construction nearby is not expected to have any effects on its structural integrity.

The center’s dock collapsed late in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 25th. No reason has been given.

“The Lakeshore Center has been declared safe for occupation and use. The University received word from UP Engineers and Architects this afternoon that all necessary emergency shoreline protection material has been placed, and their assessment shows that the building is safe for occupancy.

In addition, UP Engineers and Architects certified that the City of Houghton’s dock construction activity and vibrations will not affect the pile foundations of the Lakeshore Center.

Michigan Tech employees should plan to return to work in the Lakeshore Center on Tuesday.”
