Lake Trout Festival canceled

The Village of L’Anse will try again to get some help for marina upgrades. At last night’s council meeting, manager Bob LaFave said the state funds are needed to build a wall that will help protect the facility from high Lake Superior water levels, and to replace the aging floating dock.

You’ve had some muskrats that have set up a motel space in there that has caused some issues over the years.

A similar grant request was submitted to the state a year ago, but was turned down. Greg Kingstrom from Upper Peninsula Engineers and Architects blamed the pandemic.

A lot of the funds were taken and redirected for COVID issues across the state and that was seen in many of the grant programs last year.

If the new application is approved, funding could be available as early as 2022.

LaFave also delivered the bad news that this year’s Baraga County Lake Trout Festival has again been canceled.

Obviously not great news. Hopefully next year, we’ll be able to do something really memorable for our community, but it’s unfortunate.

Organizers recently made the decision, citing uncertainties about what COVID-19 restrictions will still be in place in early June. It’s the second straight year in which the popular festival has fallen victim to the pandemic.
