Lake Superior freezing quickly

A check of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory website shows Lake Superior is freezing quickly. In under two weeks, it has gone from barely ice covered to nearly halfway towards ice cube status. Mid-30’s temps will be in the region for several days next week, but preliminary forecasts suggest cold will return for a while after that. Conditions will be right to see a peak in ice coverage in the first half of March as is typical. That could mean, as improbable as it sounded at the start of February, that Superior ends up with an above average freeze this season.

Ice coverage doesn’t mean stable conditions. Much of the recent formation remains only around six inches in depth.

Near Copper Harbor, water currents broke through to create ice volcanoes.
