Boyd

MLB
The Detroit Tigers survived a bench-clearing brawl and a ninth-inning home run, and edged the Minnesota Twins 5-4 Saturday. The tension began in the third inning. Nicholas Castellanos and Justin Upton homered off Minnesota starter Adalberto Mejía. Justin Haley relieved him, and hit JaCoby Jones in the face with a 90 mph fastball. Things escalated in the fifth, when Matthew Boyd threw a waist-high pitch behind Twins batter Miguel Sanó. Sanó then punched Tigers catcher James McCann. Boyd and Sanó were ejected. Detroit took the lead for good in the sixth inning, on an RBI double by Castellanos, and a sacrifice fly by McCann. Francisco Rodriguez gave up a pinch-hit home run  to Jason Castro in the ninth, and another long fly ball that was caught at the right field wall by Mikie Mahtook, but he earned the save.

Jones

The Tigers conclude that series at Minnesota this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Kyle Gibson. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Jones suffered a split lip, but team officials say there was no damage to his teeth. He underwent a CT scan to check for other injuries. He’s been placed on the 10-day disabled list.  He joins first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who was placed on the 10-day DL because of the groin strain he suffered in Friday’s game. Shortstop Jose Iglesias is also on the DL, as he undergoes concussion protocol following a blow to the head Wednesday. The Tigers brought catcher John Hicks up from Toledo, an indication that backup catcher Alex Avila will fill in for Cabrera at first base.

Anderson

Ironically, Twins reliever Haley was also put on the 10-day disabled list after the game, because of tendinitis in his pitching elbow.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 Saturday. Milwaukee took an early lead on Travis Shaw’s RBI double in the first inning. Chase Anderson allowed a run in the fourth – the only score he gave up over six effective innings. Carlos Torres surrendered the winning run in the seventh, and the Cards added two more off Oliver Drake in the ninth. The Brewers host the Cardinals again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Mike Leake.

Krug

Finlandia
Joey Krug threw the first no-hitter in Finlandia University baseball history, as the Lions split a doubleheader with North Central University Saturday afternoon. Finlandia lost the opener 7-3. They took the nightcap 9-0, as Krug struck out seven batters, and walked five. Aaron Froelich had one hit in the first game, and four in the second.

Caster

The Finlandia softball team won three games against Maranatha Baptist University Saturday. In the first game, Harlie Caster had three hits and scored twice, and Kassandra Avila allowed just one unearned run in a 9-1 victory. The second game was an 18-7 slugfest – Caster, Denia Bent, Emily Nguyen and Skyler Smith each had two hits and three RBI. The Lions took the nightcap 12-6. Caster had three hits, and Dent drove in three runs. Finlandia returns home to host Northland College this afternoon at 3:30.
