KORC Spring Clean Up Will Tackle Legacy Dumps and Trails

Spring cleaning around the house might have been completed in the last few weeks. But the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation coalition has a much larger living room to clean up this spring than most residents. This weekend KORC will hold the organization’s annual spring clean-up to help maintain hiking trails, access points, and parks around the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Because we’re kind of sometimes converging on Copper Harbor, we’re having volunteers meet at sites. Those will be marked with banners on cars of different volunteer leaders for different areas. So there’s one just near Brunette Park along the Gay-Lac la Belle Road. There’s like a historic like a legacy dump there, they’re from back in the day when people just like dumped some stuff on the side of the road or in the woods.” – Andrew Ranville, Outreach Coordinator, Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition

KORC Outreach coordinator Andrew Ranville says that each year the group picks up a couple of tons worth of waste. But over the years legacy dump sites have become much easier to take care of.

But anywhere from like one of the half tons to three times of trash. Which is like made up of the small pieces of plastic all the way to like a big piece of metal or old culvert that was damaged and cut out of an old forest road or something like that. It runs the wide spectrum.” – Andrew Ranville, Outreach Coordinator, Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition

The KORC Spring Clean up in the Keweenaw on Saturday will have volunteers meet at various locations throughout the county before meeting in Copper Harbor for a cookout. Those interested in helping KORC members and volunteers this Saturday can check out a list of locations on the group’s Facebook event. Or stop by the tent on Saturday in Copper Harbor and organizers will help you find a clean-up site. Those interested in learning more about the spring clean-up locations with the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition can find more details here.
