KORC releases results from Copper Harbor cleanup

The volunteer effort to pick up litter and debris on the outlying areas east of Copper Harbor was a success. The inaugural Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition clean up held May 27th had 40 volunteers combing High Rock Bay, Clark Mine, and numerous remote roads before meeting back at The Mariner North for a catered meal.

KORC says that over one ton of trash was pulled from the scenic forests and rocky terrain. The organization reminds visitors to pick up after themselves this summer. They thank numerous clubs, organizations, and businesses who made the clean-up possible.

The inaugural KORC Keweenaw Clean-Up that took place on May 27th, 2021 was a great success! With a goal of helping the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) clean up roads and other public areas, KORC put out the call for volunteers. Over 40 volunteers came out to help collect over one ton of trash from areas like High Rock Bay, the Mandan Road, Schlatter Lake, Medora Creek bridge, and the Clark Mine. Please remember the efforts of these wonderful volunteers when out adventuring on the Keweenaw Tip this summer. Please do your part to help maintain those clean views along the roads to the DNR Keweenaw Tip and in our public parks and beaches by
disposing of all trash and recycling responsibly.

The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC) would like to thank all volunteers who participated and KORC steering committee members who helped facilitate the event. The Mariner North provided food and refreshments. Trash bags were donated by Ace Hardware of Calumet and Grant Township. Members from local organizations including the Keweenaw ATV Club, Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat, Copper Harbor Trails Club, Keweenaw
Snowmobile Club, and the Calumet Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club put in hours of work from High Rock Bay to Clark Mine to Schlatter Lake. Several organizations and businesses in Copper Harbor donated door prizes that were raffled off to volunteers. These included a dinner-for-two gift certificate from The Mariner North, one night lodging from the Copper King, two hand-painted whiskey glasses from Gail English, a framed picture from George Bailey Photography, a T-shirt and hat from the Gas-Lite, and a hat from Copper Harbor Trails Club. KORC also wishes to thank The Print Shop for printing the map and instructions for the event.

KORC plans to hold annual Keweenaw Clean-Up events and sponsor other volunteer opportunities. Any and all members of the public and organizations and businesses that love outdoor Keweenaw are invited to join KORC in its mission: to protect Keweenaw for everyone, forever.
