Older residents of the Copper Country may remember going out on the town for an old-time Copper Country dance years ago. And the Kivajat Dancers are ready to introduce the tradition to a new generation. This Friday the Kivajat dance group will invite the community to a once-regular night out, for a little traditional dancing during the old-time copper country dance. Children’s Kivajat Director Kay Seppala says that the night will have plenty of fun with live Finnish music, a special break for the Kivajat dancers, and tons of room on the dance floor for the entire community.
“And it’s just an opportunity for the community to come together and just do the old time dances. Waltz, polka, shoddish. And we do also include a lot of swing now, a little bit of jazz. Oren Tikkonen and the Backroom Boys will come and play live music, and they’re just great to dance to. There’s quite a dance community in the area, and they just really come out to enjoy the dance and then also to support the Kivajat dancers. This is our only fundraiser this year.” – Kay Seppala, Director, Children’s Kivajat Finnish American Folk Dance Group
The Old Time Copper Country Dance for the community will occur at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock starting at 7 pm. Tickets are 5 dollars, Kids under 14 can attend for free. Proceeds raised during the event will support the Kivajat Dancers and the groups travel to events throughout the year.
