Oil and Water Don’t Mix’s presentation will welcome Nichole Biber to the Keweenaw community to talk about Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinaw. On Sunday Biber will replace the presentation schedule speaker due to a personal emergency. Oil and Water Don’t Mix was organized over ten years ago to organize community action for keeping fossil fuel out of the Great Lakes. Over the years the group has shared information with communities through information programs such as Sunday’s Opportunity which has been sponsored by the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
Biber will discuss the conditions and consequences of a potential failure of the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline below the Straits. The 645-mile pipeline runs from western Canada to the eastern region of the country with major points in the Great Lakes in Wisconsin and Ontario, traveling through the Upper Peninsula before going below the straits of Mackinaw for 4.5 miles. The pipeline provides 65 percent of the propane supplied to the Upper Peninsula and 55 percent of the fuel type for the state. In the past Enbridge has assured the public that line 5 is continuously monitored and inspected for needed repairs. However, the line has had leaks in the past, including its largest spill in 1999 near Crystal Falls.
The forum is free and open to the public. It will be on Zoom only, at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83975762265?pwd=TC9BcStaTDF4dFZOU2ZsUHhZTERoUT09 Meeting ID: 839 7576 2265 |
