Keweenaw Roller Girls Ready To Rumble

Roller Derby fans at the Calumet Colosseum Saturday are going to see some high flying, hard hitting derby action.

The Keweenaw Roller Girls will take on Wisconsin’s Chippewa Valley in their first bout ever as a league sanctioned by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

Katie Jo Wright, a.k.a. “Thimbleberry Slam”, said, “I am so excited! It’s a mix of nerves and excitement and I’m really just ready to start playing it out there.”

The team features 14 skaters on the roster that practice three days a week to get ready to roll.

Wright said, “We have some rookies that are coming into the season with us, that we trained last year, and so this season training has been a balance of bringing up those that are learning the elementary skills and then really toughening the ones that have been here for a while.”

Now that they are in a league, the team is looking to get noticed, get more bouts and build their fan base.

Karvakko-051017-1

Carrie Karvakko, a.k.a. “Red Wrecking Hood”, said, “I think we just want to become more known. We’re in the U.P. and so if we can get our name out there more and become a team that people want to play and want to meet, then we get more bouts and we get more people to the U.P., which is not only good for us, but it’s good for Houghton as well—Calumet, Hancock, all of that.”

Fans at Saturday’s event will also enjoy food and drinks, a Vaudeville performance by the Calumet Drama Club, kids activities provided by KC Bonkers Toys and Coffee, and an after party at Shute’s Bar.

Doors open at 5pm.
