Keweenaw Peninsula Visitor Economy continues steady growth from recent years

Five percent of visitors traveling to Michigan recreate in the Upper Peninsula but spend more than one and a half billion dollars in the region. Recently Visit Keweenaw shared data gathered by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, tracking visitor spending around the state for Michigan‘s tourism economy.

 The region saw over 7 percent more visitors traveling around the upper peninsula in 2023. Out of the number of people traveling to tour Michigan, a little more than 5 percent make it to the state’s upper hand. But throughout their travels in the region visitors contribute 1.6 billion dollars to the region’s economy.

From 2022 to 2023 tourists in Houghton County spent 9.6 percent more than the year prior. And in Keweenaw County tourist spending increased by 6.2 percent.

Visit Keweenaw Brad Barnett says the numbers reflect what residents and long-time visitors already know. Efforts to promote sustainable tourism have helped drive economic growth, job creation, and significant tax dollars collected by state and local taxes. He adds that Visit Keweenaw looks to continue supporting and enhancing visitor experiences and ensure the region remains a vibrant point of pride in Michigan.
