Keweenaw Natural Areas celebrates fundraising milestone

Today’s mail is bringing in the final donations to Keweenaw Natural Areas for their recent fundraising effort to purchase property stretching along the Gratiot River and along Lake Superior. President John Griffith speculates that the group will fall $25,000 below the quarter million they were trying to raise, but that isn’t a bad thing.

We probably have a little bit of a shortfall but we had two donors that said, “Let us know what you need at the end and we’ll cover it.”

The donor guarantee allows KNA to begin the process of purchasing the Missing Linkage parcels. Griffith hopes the organization will be the new owner by the middle of the month. He says for now, he is doing anything but thinking about the organization. It has been a frantic three-month sprint and this year’s raffle won’t get going in earnest until near Memorial Day.

Keweenaw Natural Areas still has a mortgage for property around Conglomerate Falls. It is done with major acquisitions and will transition to paying down accumulated debts, and planning out how it will maintain and improve the land it now owns.
