The Calumet and Quincy National Historic Landmark districts were first designated in 1989 because of their nationally significant copper mining history and the rich density of historic buildings, sites, and structures that reflect that history.
The nominations of the Calumet and the Quincy National Historic Landmarks have changed, and a great deal of historical knowledge has been added to the archives.
The nominations need to be updated to reflect the knowledge and some historic properties that have been lost to fire, development, and other factors.
The National Park Service and the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission are hosting an open house to share updates.
National Park Service staff will give a short presentation about the National Historic Landmark program and an overview of how the nominations have changed, including modifications to the boundaries. Copies of the nominations and maps will be available for review, and staff will be available to answer questions. Light refreshments will be provided.
The open house will be held Monday evening at 7 at the National Park Service’s Calumet Visitor Center.
