Across the country, many will look up toward the sky this afternoon to see the latest solar eclipse. Even though the Keweenaw Peninsula is not in the eclipse’s path of totality, the region will see the moon cover the majority of the sun. About 80 percent of the moon will cover the sun from the region’s perspective, reaching the maximum coverage around 3:10 pm.
The astronomical phenomena will begin at 2 pm today and last a little less than two and a half hours. The last time the Keweenaw Peninsula was located in the path of a total solar eclipse was January 24th, 1925. The next time the region will a full solar eclipse won’t happen for another 82 years in 2106.
Today to celebrate the solar eclipse passing through North America the Keweenaw National Historic Park will host a solar eclipse party at Agassiz Park in Calumet at 2 pm. The solar eclipse will begin at 1:58 pm, and last until 4:20 pm.
It’s very important to protect your eyes if viewing the solar eclipse to avoid potential damage to the retina. Please use a pair of solar eclipse glasses.
