Keweenaw Mountain Lodge creates a red light trail for hikers viewing the night sky

The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge enhances its dark sky experience with a new red light trail. In recent years the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge has upgraded lighting and its grounds to show off the Keweenaw Peninsula’s incredible night sky. The newest addition to the park will include special red lights to allow the hikers the ability to see where they are going while remaining acclimated to the darker conditions.

Red light does not burn rhodopsin proteins on the rods within the eye like white light does. The bulbs along the trails were crafted by the University of Michigan Professor and founder of APT Solar Solutions Mojtaba Akhavan Tafti. The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and APT Solutions were able to connect on the project through involvement with the Michigan Economic Development Corporations’ Office of Future Mobility and Electrification. Allowing Akahavan Tafti an opportunity to visit the Keweenaw Peninsula to help with the installation. Akhavan Tafti says of the experience, that it was great to work with environmentally focused and innovative leaders at the Lodge as the pilot site for APT Solar Solutions’ solar lighting fixtures.

Those interested in learning more about the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and the Dark Sky Park can find more details in the Keweenaw report including information on the park’s upcoming winter Night Sky Photography Workshop here.
