The Nature Conservancy announced the acquisition of more than 32,000 acres last year, known as the Keweenaw Heartlands.
They held public input sessions and surveys, gathering responses from locals on what they would like to see happen with the Heartlands.
The draft summarizes the desired characteristics of the body that would govern the Heartlands. The majority of answers cited that there was not currently an organization they would trust to govern the Heartlands, but answers suggested a current organization could be adapted, such as the DNR or KORC. The study concluded that a governing body ideally would have representatives from stakeholders on the board or at least an advisory committee that would suggest decisions.
There is a draft of the Principles and Values for Management of the Keweenaw Heartlands Blueprint is published online and available for review.
The draft can be found under the section titled “Latest Blueprint section is available for public review and input” here.
There will be a meeting tomorrow at the Eagle Harbor Township Hall from 3-4 p.m. to discuss the summarization of the previous input gathered.
The public will also be able to meet the project manager of the Keweenaw Heartlands, Julia Petersen, at the meeting.
