Keweenaw Guts Day Slated for Saturday

Three veterans of Keweenaw Guts Day played on Team USA Red, in London, England, last year, part of the WFDF World Ultimate and Guts Championships, the Olympics of disc sports. Left to right: Al Nettell of Hancock, Cam Verigin of Marquette, Will Blau of Hancock, and Stephen Dudenas of Lake Linden.

CALUMET: Players from novice to professional will be flinging Frisbees at the fifth annual Keweenaw Guts Day, Saturday, May 20, from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Highway 41 in Calumet.

A major feature of the event is the Top Gun Award, given to the high school student who throws the orange Professional Model Frisbee disc the fastest speed, as registered on the radar gun. Past winners, their schools, and their speeds are:

2013: Jacob Norkol, HCH, 55 mph
2014: Stephen Dudenas, LL-H, 63 mph
2015: Matt Wiita, LL-H, 72 mph
Ally Paakala, HHS, 46 mph
2016: Will Blau, HCH, 70 mph
Nicole St. Martin, HHS, 49 mph

Also, Guts Frisbee instruction will be given to all who are interested in trying out the sport for the first time, and t-shirts and Frisbee discs will be given free of charge. Last year, professional Cam Verigin of Marquette threw 81 mph on the radar gun.

Players will feast on free Vollwerth’s brats and dogs, Monster and Coca-Cola beverages, courtesy of Hancock Bottling, title sponsor of the 60th Annual Coca-Cola International Frisbee Tournament, to be held July-8-9 in Calumet’s Agassiz Field.

There are many different disc events slated for this year’s Frisbee Week, July 5-9, including a fun Guts Frisbee tournament especially targeting new (and really old) players, starting at 12:01 p.m., Thursday, July 6 at the Eagle Harbor Ball Yard. It’s another place first-timers can get experience before the Coca-Cola IFT and hopefully meet legendary Tournament Director Harvey J. Kukuk.
