Keweenaw Co-Op cuts the ribbon on the new Quincy Street location

Opening day has finally come. The Keweenaw Co-Op will celebrate its grand move into downtown Hancock. The move onto Quincy Street from its location on Ethel Avenue marks a major move for the member-owned grocer after 50 years in the copper country.

Starting as a pre-order bulk-buying club in 1973, the co-op grew quickly over its first 13 years. And in 1986 set up shop on Ethel Avenue. In recent years the co-op found it necessary to move, finding a location with better loading space, a larger sales floor, and an opportunity to expand services offered while grocery shopping.

The new 4,000-square-foot location at 610 Quincy Street will offer grab-and-go meals, such as take-and-bake pizza or rotisserie chicken, a soup of the day, kombucha on tap, and catering options beyond its healthful groceries. Today’s grand opening will begin at 11:30 am, with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce at noon.
