The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s connection to water runs deep. Today starts the tribe’s 11th annual Pauline Knapp-Spruce Water Memorial Water Walk. Over the past 11 years, the movement has helped to raise awareness in the region of the status of the Great Lakes. After years of mining, shipping, fishing, and tourism activity, environmental challenges across the Great Lakes region have shown the need to protect and keep the waters. Michigan’s place at the center of the Great Lakes system sets the state up as a region greatly concerned with the health of the lakes. The 2024 Water Walk with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will travel 17 miles around the Keweenaw Bay. Starting at First Sand Point at Pequamming Point and walking to Sand Point. Opening Ceremonies begin this morning with the community planning to meet at the Powwow Grounds ‘ pavilion for a feast afterward.
