Keeping the focus on Wal-Mart. Over the past few weeks the property tax assessment dispute between the city of Houghton and national retailer Wal-Mart, has been brought to the forefront of public discussions. The dispute was paused during the city’s recovery from the father’s day flood and the covid pandemic. Wal-Mart recently motioned to have the tax assessment case with the Michigan Tax Tribunal moved out of abeyance, and back to court.
To keep the issue at the forefront of residents’ minds, City Manager Eric Waara, plans to host a Q & A session tonight at the Portage Lake District Library. Waara intends to discuss both the tax tribunal case, as well as the city’s lawsuit against the retail store in federal court. Those interested in hearing more about the property tax assessment dispute, can attend the Q & A, beginning at 6 pm.
