The US EPA selects a Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College department chair for the HBCU-MSI Federal Advisory Council. KBOCC Chair for the Department of Environmental Science Andrew Kozich has been selected by the Environmental Protection Agency to join the Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions Federal Advisory Council. Kozich’s appointment marks an important step forward in the recognition and contributions of the Keweenaw by Ojibwa Community College to environmental education and equity initiatives within Tribal College and Universities. The establishment of the HBCU-MSI advisory council with the EPA is a part of the government’s efforts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within the federal workforce. An executive order signed by President Biden ensures the council aims to offer voices of minority-serving institutions, such as KBOCC, to play a vital role in shaping future EPA policies and programs. Kozich says he’s honored to join the advisory council and bring the perspective of tribal colleges to national conversations on environmental justice. EPA Administrator Michael Regan has appointed 20 initial members to the council with terms lasting until 2026. The council will plan to meet two to three times a year to provide recommendations to the EPA administrator.
