The Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the second inning, and defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-3 in their season-opener yesterday. JaCoby Jones and Nicholas Castellanos homered in the big inning, and Ian Kinsler added a solo shot in the fourth. It was Jones’ first major league home run. Justin Verlander pitched into the seventh, and was charged with two runs on six hits. He struck out 10. The Tigers will face the White Sox in Chicago again this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will start against James Shields. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Tigers outfielder Justin Upton left the game after bruising his knee while making a catch in the outfield. He’s considered day-to-day.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost their second straight game, falling to the Colorado Rockies 6-5 last night. Zach Davies gave up four runs in the third inning. He was also charged with two more runners who scored after he left the game in the fifth, and was replaced by Jhan Mariñez. Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee. Those teams meet again tonight in Milwaukee. Wily Peralto will pitch against Tyler Chatwood.
The Brewers have brought Brent Suter up from Colorado Springs to fill the roster spot created when Junior Guerra was placed on the disabled list. Suter will work out of the bullpen, and Tommy Milone will join the starting rotation.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Ottawa Senators 2-0 last evening. Jimmy Howard stopped 20 shots, and took the loss. Detroit will play its final two games of the season – and the final two games at Joe Louis Arena – this weekend. They’ll host the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night. Faceoff is at 7:00. They welcome the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. Faceoff will be at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons return to action tonight at Toronto. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Northland College yesterday. The Lions lost the first game 12-4. Joey Krug had two hits, and Brian Doyle drove in two runs. Finlandia lost the second game 6-3. Krug had three more hits, and drove in all three Lions’ runs.
GLIAC
Lake Superior State University athletic director Kris Dunbar has been named the new commissioner of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Dunbar is a Sault Ste. Marie native. She played college basketball for the Lakers, coached the women’s hoops team for eight successful seasons, and has been athletic director for a decade. She replaces Dell Robinson, who resigned last June.
