Jersey Fund Helps Bring Extra Comforts To Oncology Patients

CALUMET, Mich. – Calumet High School (CHS) and Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital are partnering once again for the Jersey Fund in support of local cancer care.

The Jersey Fund is a collaborative effort between CHS students and Aspirus to help bring extra comfort to oncology patients during their care. Funds are raised through student-organized activities and jersey silent auctions during the Calumet Copper Kings varsity girls basketball game on Monday, Feb. 13, and the varsity boys hockey game on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Athletes gear up in pink for both games.

All proceeds benefit the Keweenaw Health Foundation’s Cancer Fund to support the purchase of patient comfort items approved by the Cancer Care team at Aspirus. Warming blankets and iPads are some of the items the event has helped purchase.

Partnering sponsors this year include: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Calumet Machine, Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home, Keweenaw Health Foundation, Miron Construction Co., Inc., Pat’s Foods, Range Bank, River Valley Bank, and U.P. Engineers and Architects, Inc.

CHS students have already started raising money through root beer float and pink, cream-filled doughnut sales during lunch. The middle school organized a dance and planned a designated Wear-Your-Hat-To-School Day. During the games, students will be selling chocolate kisses for donations. Jersey silent auctions will take place at both games. Bidding sheets will be available in the lobby areas. There’s a $75 minimum bid to enter.

The Jersey Fund gets underway with the Copper Kings varsity girls basketball game at 7 p.m.  Monday, Feb. 13, at the Calumet High School Gym, followed by the varsity boys hockey game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Calumet Colosseum. Both games are against the Houghton Gremlins.
