J and J vaccine being administered again

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department is once again offering the Johnson and Johnson one-dose vaccine. It was paused for a little over a week while a review of its potential link to blood clots, particularly in younger women, was conducted. Health Officer Kate Beer says that it is an option at community vaccination events, along with Moderna. For those who are still hesitant regarding the Johnson and Johnson shot, they can still begin the vaccine process.

Beer says the department will favor the J&J dose for housebound residents. There is very little overlap between the demographic most at risk for clotting and those targeted by that specific program.

It’s just a small group that they’ve found the most cases in.

Beer says overall demand for all three vaccines is beginning to wane as those who were eager to get their shots have mostly done so.

We’re definitely seeing a drop in the demand. Particularly in Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties we’re seeing a drop, also Baraga.

A new COVID-19 update shows activity in Houghton County continues to decline. Over the past week, there were only 24 new cases. Baraga County now leads on a per-capita basis, registering 18 new cases. Keweenaw County had just three.
