Separate announcements from the National Park Service and the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau are heralding the reopening of Isle Royale National Park. Boating access points, trails, and campgrounds on the island will be available for public use beginning Friday, April 16th. Park staff need to evaluate the condition of the Minong Trail. It is expected to remain closed into June.
Most people access Isle Royale through ferries, like the Ranger III. Its first trip is scheduled for May 25th. The seaplane service operating from the Houghton/Hancock area is another option. COVID-19 guidelines have capacity limited to 50 percent for the ferries. An influx of residents to the Upper Peninsula and an outdoor renewal saw natural attractions like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising set records last year. The Mackinac Bridge Authority is expecting another banner summer tourism season for 2021.
Even though Isle Royale is the nation’s least visited national park, that combination has officials urging people to get their tickets early. Ranger Chris Amidon says, “Isle Royale is a destination that demands your time. Time to research. Time to confirm reservations. Time to travel aboard the transportation to the island. The more you’re able to plan in advance, especially in 2021, the more likely a trip will happen.” Online registration started on March 1st. The visitor center on the Houghton waterfront reopens April 19th to make arrangements in person.
