Isle Royale National Park staff educate area students

Isle Royale is a wonder for adults, but even more so for kids. Being a long boat ride across Lake Superior, it is also one of the natural resources that area students may not know much about. Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association Membership Outreach Manager Susanna Ausema talks about her visits to different Copper Country schools.

And I have been using the I spy Isle Royale children’s book, so the kids learn about Isle Royale and how you get to Isle Royale, and some of the wildlife that lives on the island. We just had a fun chance to have an overview on what makes Isle Royale special enough to be a national park.

Ausema says that the trip is particularly challenging for families given the financial commitment required. She believes that being near a national park, even without visiting, provides an opportunity for the community.

It’s something special enough that people from all over the world, especially the United States, travel and spend a lot of money to try to get to. I think it’s important for them [students] to understand they have an opportunity to be a steward and supporter of that mission.

The Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association relies on its members to educate not only local children, but adults and park visitors about the unique treasures found on the island and at the Keweenaw National Historical Park.
