Emma Bleau struck out 14 batters, gave up just four hits, and drove in one of Ishpeming’s runs as the Hematites edged L’Anse 2-1 in the Division Four district title game at the Hancock Driving Park Friday. In the three tournament games this week, Bleau compiled 41 strikeouts. Meagan Kraft closed her L’Anse career by striking out seven in the narrow loss.

The Purple Hornets reached the final by defeating Hancock 5-2. Ishpeming eliminated Baraga 7-1. Megan Anderson’s home run in the fourth was one of just two hits for the Vikettes.

The Gogebic Miners took the Division Four district baseball title Friday at the Driving Park, coming from behind to defeat Jeffers 7-3 in the title game.  Jackson Rocchi scored twice as a courtesy runner after Darren Nordstrom singles to help the Jets to a 3-1 lead after the top of the fifth inning. The Miners scratched out four runs in the bottom of the inning without benefit of a hit to gain a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Jeffers advanced to the final with a 5-1 victory over L’Anse. In the other semifinal, the Copper Country Conference’s Most Valuable Pitcher, Shane Cole, outdueled the Most Valuable Player, Hans Stimac, in a 5-2 Gogebic victory.

JD Martinez

MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored early and often, and ripped the Chicago White Sox 15-5 Friday night. Detroit broke the game open with 10 runs over the first three innings. The Tigers collected 18 hits – 12 for extra bases. Mikie Mahtook, J.D. Martinez and John Hicks homered. Michael Fulmer gave up five runs over seven innings, and earned the win.

Boyd

The Tigers host the White Sox again this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Miguel Gonzalez. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Tigers have sent struggling starter Matthew Boyd down to Toledo. Boyd won a job in the rotation with a solid performance in spring training, but has struggled over the past several weeks. Reliever Daniel Stumpf has been brought up from the Mud Hens. Buck Farmer appears to be the most likely candidate to replace Boyd in the rotation.

Nelson

Cody Bellinger’s home run in the top of the 12th inning lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Friday night. The early part of the game was a pitchers’ duel. L-A’s Clayton Kershaw struck out 14 batters, and allowed just one run on two hits over seven innings. Milwaukee’s Jimmy Nelson struck out 11, and gave up just five hits over eight shutout inning. The Dodgers’ Yasmani Grandal forced extra innings with a solo home run off Corey Knebel in the top of the ninth. Neftalí Feliz took the loss in relief.

The Brewers entertain the Dodgers again this afternoon. Matt Garza will start against Rich Hill.

NHL
The Stanley Cup playoffs continue tonight at Nashville. The Penguins lead the Predators two games to none.
