In-person interviews for Calumet manager taking place

The first of two finalists for the Calumet manager position was in town Monday. Kelly Beattie says it is his first time ever visiting the village and it has left him impressed.

Everyone I’ve talked to today, people that, you know, my friend that grew up here, when I called her up and talked to her about it…gush about this place. Have great things to say about it.

Beattie was met by councilors Andrew Ranville and Rob Tarvis, among others, for a tour at about 11 AM, which lasted several hours. He was accompanied on the trip by his wife and they even did some surveying of available homes.

After giving a brief work and education history, Beattie was asked to speak about a document he prepared called the 3, 6, 12 plan. It lists actions the new manager should take immediately, after having settled into the role, and within the first year. The numbers coincide with the months on the job. Beattie says he intends to be an active manager if given the opportunity.

If you don’t get out and actually look at what you’re dealing with, if you try to do this job from an office, I don’t think you can succeed.

The village will conduct the second interview Thursday. Amber Goodman, a native of Keweenaw County, is the other finalist. Councilors expect to make a selection in one week on September 7th.
