Huge turnout for Ahmeek Fire fundraiser

Saturday’s Ahmeek Fire Department spaghetti dinner saw over 100 more people attend than was expected. Grant Administrator Michael Defina says the fundraiser is seeing explosive growth over the past couple of years.

It was an overwhelming success. We planned on feeding 500 people and the unofficial final count was 635. Last year was in the neighborhood of 500 and that was nearly 200 more than two years ago.

The dinner is one of only two fundraisers that the department hosts each year, the other being on the Fourth of July. Defina says that the crew use their own special homemade recipe and put in a little extra effort to ensure that it is more than just a meal.

We make our own sauce. There are a lot of ingredients and spices for that.

Each dinner cost $10.00. In addition to spaghetti, sides of coleslaw and garlic bread were included. It was served curbside in a to-go fashion only.

The department recently received an anonymous $30,000 donation, which ensures it has enough money to purchase a new rescue truck. Defina says the proceeds from the spaghetti dinner will go to additional equipment for that vehicle. A raffle and other efforts were coordinated with the meal.
