The high school hockey and girls basketball tournaments open tonight.
In hockey, Great Lakes Conference co-champions Hancock and Calumet meet at 7:00 in the opening round of the regional at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Our broadcast will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
In girls basketball…
– In the Class D district at Lake Linden, Jeffers faces Ontonagon at 5:30, and Lake Linden-Hubbell will take on Baraga at 7:30. Our coverage will begin around 5:10 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.
– In the Class C district, Calumet plays at Ironwood at 6:00, and Hancock tips off at L’Anse at 6:00.
– In the Class B district, Menominee plays at Kingsford. Houghton has a bye, and will begin play Wednesday against Escanaba. We’ll broadcast Wednesday’s game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Finlandia
The Finlandia baseball team began its spring trip to Orlando yesterday a pair of losses to Hanover College. In the first game, the Panthers scored four runs in the sixth inning en route to a 6-2 victory. Joshua Gregory homered in the second game, but the Lions fell 7-5. Finlandia will face Cabrini University in a doubleheader today.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons retired Rip Hamilton’s number-32 yesterday, then dropped a 104-98 to the Boston Celtics. The Pistons host the Portland Trail Blazers tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return from a week-long break tomorrow night at Vancouver. We’ll join the game after Pistons basketball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost a 5-2 spring training game to the New York Mets yesterday. Matt Boyd gave up two hits over two scoreless innings Buck Farmer gave up two runs, and took the loss. The Tigers host the Atlanta Braves this afternoon. Our broadcast will begin at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell 10-8 to the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. Wily Peralta threw two scoreless innings in his first spring start. Minor-leaguer Ryan Cordell homered and drove in four runs. The Brewers will face the Texas Rangers this afternoon.
Local Hockey
The Portage Lake Flyer Squirt hockey team is heading to the state tournament in Muskegon this weekend. Today, they are wrapping up a can drive to help pay for the trip. Trucks are parked at Festival Foods in Houghton and Pat’s Foods in Hancock for your donations.
Congratulations to several local teams who played well at the 32nd Annual Betty Beckman Tournament in Marquette over the weekend. The CCJHA Mite 8U team and the Copper Country Oldtimers each took first place. The CCJHA Mite 6U team took third place.
