Household Hazardous Waste: Automotive Fluid and Where To Dispose Of It.

The Copper Country Recycling Initiative is working hard to increase opportunities for recycling in our community through grants, sharing resources with teachers, and meeting with local officials.

They currently have a Household Hazardous Waste survey available to the public, and need 100 more surveys before they can move forward. They would like to get as much data as possible to assist in applying for grants for collection events in Houghton County.

Reducing household hazardous waste can include discarding automotive and mechanical fluids properly. Pouring them in a backyard can allow its contaminants to leach into drinking water, affecting plants, animals, and even humans. To prevent this from occurring, proper disposal of the fluids can be done locally. There are several locations that collect the fluids, but you should call ahead to confirm collection availability and whether there is a cost involved.

You can dispose of the fluids at Autozone in Houghton, Ed’s Used Parts in Houghton, Houghton County Transfer Station in Atlantic Mine, and Bekkala’s Diesel Repair on Highway 41 and Oneco Road.
