Houghton waterfront work delayed

During his administrative report at Wednesday’s Houghton City Council meeting, Manager Eric Waara warned that delays are almost assured at this point on the waterfront pier construction project. Weather has provided some difficulties, but is not the primary culprit. Waara says crews still do not know where telephone lines run in the area.

I hate to say it. The delay that AT&T is causing right now is going to cost, probably in the end it is going to cost us time and money. We’re going to have to find a way to mitigate that with them somehow.

The cable extends under the canal to the AT&T building in Ripley. It is a choke point because if the line is severed it knocks out all telephone service, landline and cell alike, for the rest of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Waara also addressed cruise ships returning this summer. Houghton City Police, municipal officials, and others have begun brainstorming for a marine security plan. He said that more advanced efforts are not possible until the city knows for sure where docking will happen. The thought is down near Roy’s Pasties and Bake Shop. Councilor Mike Needham said beautification efforts should be looked at for that stretch of waterfront. As of now it is all pavement or sidewalk, with little permanent greenspace.
