Houghton waiting on decision regarding potential KFC

A case was argued last week in 12th Circuit Court that will determine the future of a potential Kentucky Fried Chicken location on Houghton’s west side. The proposed site is an outlot located between Tadych’s Marketplace and Evangel Community Church.

The site plan review was approved by Houghton’s Planning Commission last year, and at one time a sign touted the fast food chain’s pending arrival sometime in 2022. That has since been removed and the City of Houghton was named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Planning Commission members say their job is to see if a proposed business complies with existing ordinances and no more, which is what they maintain happened in this particular case. They say legal disputes regarding agreed upon uses in a shared parking lot are best left to be settled by the parties involved, rather than by municipal officials.

The judge heard arguments last Thursday and is still working on his opinion. Court Administrator Laura Lamerand says she hopes it will be available by the end of the week.
