Houghton schedules first parking deck open house

The City of Houghton has organized a public engagement event to discuss the future of the downtown parking deck next Wednesday at 5:30 PM. It will last two hours and is being hosted at the Bonfire at the Continental Fire Company on Montezuma Avenue downtown.

Houghton is working with Patrick Coleman, a familiar face in the city’s Master Plan efforts. Unlike those open house gatherings, this one will be more demanding of attendees. Clerk Ann Vollrath says that those who intend to come should be ready to commit for the full time.

It’s something that you would probably stay for the whole two hours, because Pat will give a presentation, then there’s a question and answer session, and then he’s going to break people into groups, where they’ll do an exercise. And then the groups will report their ideas. Once you get there, you’ll want to be there the whole time.

Up to three meetings on the subject may take place throughout the fall. It has not been disclosed yet if future events will operate under the same format, if they happen at all. Houghton City Council voted over the summer to commit to tearing down the parking deck. As it works to determine how to finance the demolition, it is encouraging the public to develop an alternative use for the space.
