UPDATE:
A 29 year old Houghton man was driving north on Portage Street when the car experienced a mechanical failure. The car continued to gain momentum as it continued north of Portage Street, crossing Montezuma Avenue, and entered the parking deck. The vehicle crashed through the guard rail, striking the south east corner of the UP Engineers and Architects building, and struck another unoccupied vehicle. The car came to a stop on its roof. The driver was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained as a result of the accident, and he was later released.
Assisting on the scene were Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, the Hancock Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and the Houghton Fire Department.
Houghton police are investigating the cause of a personal injury accident that occurred around 1:40 pm Wednesday. Houghton police officers responded to the scene located near Portage Street. The driver of the vehicle was transported to UPHS -Portage by Mercy Ambulance. More details are expected as the department’s investigation develops. Assisting on scene were deputies with the Houghton County Sheriff, MSP Calumet Troopers, and Hancock Police.
