The City of Houghton is taking applications for a new member of its Board of Review until 4:00 PM on June 2nd. The body plays an important role in settling disputes between the assessor and property owners. Clerk Ann Vollrath says most of the time commitment for the position occurs in March. The board meets for two six-hour sessions on consecutive days, once during the day and the other session lasting from 3:00 to 9:00 PM.
A brief meeting in the middle of July lasts around one hour. The same happens in December and soon-to-be-mandatory state training occurs in January. A vast majority of the business that comes before the group is residential in nature, but some commercial cases are a possibility.
All Board of Review members are required to be electors of Houghton and own property within the city.
