Houghton holding enforcement hearing for dilapidated College Ave house

The residence located at 915 College Avenue in Houghton, which burned for hours in March, is a potential hazard and the city wants to tear it down. Manager Eric Waara says he expects to hear from the owner that there are no plans to demolish the damaged structure that remains. He says the city has the resources to complete the task.

Ultimately, if the property owner is not going to take action it is going to be my recommendation that Public Works takes this building down. We’ve done this before and that’s been the most cost effective way in dealing with this.

Costs are shared between funds held in escrow and future tax levies on the property.

There is a procedure that must be followed in accordance with Houghton’s dangerous building ordinance. A show-cause hearing was never attended by the property owner. Next up is to reach out and make the party aware of an enforcement hearing, slated for November 17th. The meeting is presided over by the city council.
