Houghton Hockey Hosting the Bridgefest 2024 Cornhole Tournement

Bridgefest will return to the Houghton Hancock area before you know it. Bridgefest’s celebration of all things summer and the Copper Country will include many local craft vendors, locally organized games, a fireworks display, and much more. Throughout the festival, activities are organized by local groups for the community including a special cornhole tournament.

BridgeFest is the big community event here in Houghton, our hometown, for the summer and we wanted to be a part of it and also combine a fundraiser for our high school hockey team. The cornhole tournament is a way we can contribute to the BridgeFest festivities and raise money for our program at the same time. It will go towards travel expenses, which have increased in recent years. So we wanted to do this so we can keep the cost low for student-athletes and continue to contribute to our community.” – Micah Stipech, Head Coach, Houghton High School Hockey

Houghton High School Hockey has plenty of fans in the area that regularly support high school athletes. Throughout the season you’ll often find the Dee Stadium filled with friends, and families watching the young talent on the ice. Those fans even sometimes travel to see the team on the road. Whether locally or across the bridge.

Ice hockey is an expensive sport, and travel expenses have increased in recent years. We’re fortunate in Houghton, just like other schools in the community in which our school subsidizes the majority of our travel expenses. But this is a way we can keep the parents from having to pay more expenses for their kids to participate in a great sport like hockey and represent our community on the ice. We’ll be adding a second trip this year to Grand Rapids in addition to the trip to Trenton. We’re the face of our school when we go on these trips and we just want to do a good job representing our community and keeping the cost low.” – Micah Stipech, Head Coach, Houghton High School Hockey

Houghton High School Hockey’s cornhole tournament cost 50 dollars to register. Houghton Hockey head coach Micah Stipech would also like to extend gratitude to Shari Tapani for helping the team organize an exciting activity for Bridgefest. Houghton High School hockey won’t be the only high school group in charge of an activity during the weekend. Hancock Athletic Boosters will host a Dunk Tank fundraiser for the athletic department on June 15th. Both fundraisers will take place at Kestner Park in Houghton alogside many other activities.
